9 Things a Leader Must Do—#1 Excavate Your Soul

leaderbook I am going through Dr. Henry Cloud’s book, 9 Things a Leader Must Do.  The book has been a great challenge for me and I would recommend everyone to read it who finds them self in some type of leadership position, either at work, church, or a parent at home.

I thought I would share just a little of what I am learning through this book journey.

#1—Leaders MUST Excavate their soul.

God has put into every leader the talents and gifts to be the leader He wants them to be.

Leadership success is the process of digging up the treasures of the invisible soul in order to bring dreams, desires, and talents into the visible world  –Dr. Cloud

In order for a leader to optimize his leadership he/she must:

  • become aware of his/her dreams, desires, talents, and other treasures of the soul.
  • Listens to them and values them as life itself.
  • Takes steps to develop them, beginning in very small ways.
  • Seeks coaching and help to make them grow.
  • Does not care as much about his/her results, just continues to express his/her soul-treasures where they can.

The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership

Being a great leader means more than just having people follow you. Kouzes and Posner (2008) point out 5 things that leaders can do that will put them above the rest, model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart.   leader

Model the way

The practice of modeling the way is states that exemplary leaders lead by example. “Leaders’ deeds are far more important than their words when determining how serious they really are about what they do” (Kouzes, et al., 2008, p. 27). If a leader desires for others to follow, he must be willing to not only lead the way, but to do some of the dirty work that gets them the team there. A leader is always being watched. Therefore, an exemplary leader will not only recognize that but make sure that, on all levels, they are acting with integrity, excellence and honor (Skovira, 2006).

Inspire a shared vision

Inspiring a shared vision means that leaders not only know the big picture of what their organization seeks to accomplish but knows how to pull everyone into that vision so that they can own the vision as well. Strait (2006) notes that vision helps “define a scope, that provides specific goals, objectives, assumptions, and constraints that will enable this vision to be realized” (p.42). Scripture points out that “where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18, King James Version). Having a vision is important but unless the leader can transfer that vision to his followers, the vision will be lost.

Challenge the process

Exemplary leaders know the importance of thinking outside the box. To challenge the process means a leader is always looking for “opportunities to innovate, grow, and improve” (Kouzes, et al., 2008, p. 29). They are not satisfied with the status quo but are willing be innovative in their approach and practice. Bossink (2007) notes that “a manager who wants to guide and steer the sustainable innovation processes has to be, or become, an innovation manager with substantial leadership competence” (p. 135).

Enable others to act

Leaders must not act alone. They must be willing to surround themselves with a team of people who can get the job done. Kouzes, et al. (2008), point out that “leaders enable others to act not by hoarding the power they have but by giving it away” (p. 31). Exemplary leaders are able to inspire others without acting like dictators to do so (Hickman & Murphy, 2006).

Encourage the heart

“It’s part of the leader’s job to show appreciation for people’s contributions and to create a culture of celebration” (Kouzes, et al., 2008, p. 32). People we are leading not only want to know they are contributing but need to know they are valuable pieces to the puzzle. Research has shown that those in military leadership gain the trust of their subordinates by showing concern for who they are and by acknowledging the skills they possess (Sweeney, Thomson, & Blanton, 2009).

My Top Ten—So Far

It has been a while since I have posted anything new concerning what is going on in my life.  I hope to do so here.

1.  My goal for this year is to live 1John 2.6, “Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.”  I want to walk just as Jesus walked.

2.  I am transferring degrees from Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology to a Master of Arts in Management and Leadership.  Just sense that the counseling path is the path God has for me right now.

3.  I have read two fiction/non-spiritual books in the past month (that is a record for me, since I prefer non-fiction spiritually related books).  I read, The End Is Now, by Rob Stennett.  Though it is a spiritually focused book it is fiction book.  The other book I just finished up is, Tiger Force, by Michael Sallah and Mitch Weiss.  The book is the account of a renegade group of U.S. soldiers in the Vietnam War.  This book was way out of my normal reading habits but Anna got it for me and I really enjoyed reading it.  I read it all in about 3 nights.  It taught me a lot about human nature especially in moments of extreme crisis and conflict.

4.  I am currently reading, In Common:  Catalyst Groupzine.  It is a compilation of authors discussing the importance of community among Christians.  catalyst

5.  EPIC is going well.  I really like our FUSE Nights in which parents are encouraged to attend.  Our current programming breakdown is:

  1. First week of the month—FUSE Night (Dinner with families and then parents have separate discussion while students do their regular programming).
  2. 2nd and 3rd week of the month—regular EPIC format
  3. 4th week of the month—rotate between an outreach activity and service projects.

6.  I am excited that the Colts are in the Super Bowl!!!!

7.  I am focused heavily on The CHILL which is our High School winter retreat.  You can read about it here.

8.  My personal spiritual development has been taking me through the book of Acts.  Though I haven’t been as consistent as I should, I have been impacted about the leadership of the Holy Spirit in the early church.  The result of His empowering of Christ-followers was incredible boldness and compassion which led to incredible growth and ministry opportunities.

9.  The fam is doing well.  Isaac and Noah continually do well at school.  Isaac has been quite the Jesus-witness at school (we are waiting te get calls from the school and/or parents).  Emma is Emma—really enough said!  She is getting sweeter by the day.  I live for our nightly snuggle moments.

10.  Anna and I have been working out.  Though it has been painful,  I have really enjoyed the experience.  I have lost about 10 pounds in the past 15 days.  My favorite snack is Steamed Sugar Snap Peas—and no I am not kidding!
