The Slow Fade by Reggie Joiner, Chuck Bomar, and Abbie Smith

Are there any good books you have planned to read this summer?  I would love to see the list!!

Horton @ Hyatt

March 13, 2009 By: Ryan Category: Ministry Blogs, Personal

This morning, I had the opportunity to speak at Hyatt Middle School to their Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) group.  It was a lot of fun.  Below is an excerpt from FCA coordinator and teacher, Jonathan Juravich.

This morning we were blessed to have Ryan Smith, from Grace Point Community Church, come and speak with us!

Ryan read to us "Horton Hatches an Egg." in the story Horton the Elephant is tricked by a lazy bird to sit on an egg. He sits through rain, snow, being made fun of, captured by Hunters, sold to a circus… and the horrible list goes on. But at the end, Horton is rewarded by the egg hatching…and out comes a very unique Ele-bird! He is 100% happy.

When he was sitting on that egg he did not give up, he is loyal and dedicated to his cause: sitting on that egg. For so many of us we are nearing the end of the year (and for some, the end of middle school) and we can’t get lazy. We have a hard time putting in all of our time and instead want to just give up. But then we never get that satisfaction (or in Horton’s case the 100% happy!).

In James 1:12 we read "Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial." Don’t just take it from Dr. Seuss, it is in God’s word… plain as day. If we hold true, if we persevere…at the end we are so greatly rewarded. (also check out James 1:2-4!)

Thank you for coming today Ryan and for sharing your awesome message!

A BIG thanks to Tom Houser for the message idea!!!!!

Resolutions

December 29, 2008 By: Ryan Category: God, Life

Of course, with the dawn of the new year, resolutions are at the forefront of the minds of many people.  I have scanned over my resolutions the past few years and am discouraged as to how many I never celebrated as completed and yet every year I make a new list and vow that this year is going to be different.

Every year I am also reminded about the Resolutions of one of my favorite theologians, Jonathan Edwards.  Below is his exhaustive list of 70 Resolutions that he made, not in January but in the middle of the year.

THE RESOLUTIONS of Jonathan Edwards

BEING SENSIBLE THAT I AM UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING WITHOUT GOD’ S HELP, I DO HUMBLY ENTREAT HIM BY HIS GRACE TO ENABLE ME TO KEEP THESE RESOLUTIONS, SO FAR AS THEY ARE AGREEABLE TO HIS WILL, FOR CHRIST’ S SAKE.

Remember to read over these Resolutions once a week.

1. Resolved, that I will do whatsoever I think to be most to God’ s glory, and my own good, profit and pleasure, in the whole of my duration, without any consideration of the time, whether now, or never so many myriads of ages hence. Resolved to do whatever I think to be my duty and most for the good and advantage of mankind in general. Resolved to do this, whatever difficulties I meet with, how many soever, and how great soever.

2. Resolved, to be continually endeavoring to find out some new contrivance and invention to promote the aforementioned things.

3. Resolved, if ever I shall fall and grow dull, so as to neglect to keep any part of these Resolutions, to repent of all I can remember, when I come to myself again.

4. Resolved, never to do any manner of thing, whether in soul or body, less or more, but what tends to the glory of God; nor be, nor suffer it, if I can avoid it.
