I came across a recent article that didn’t surprise me but it did alarm me. It is in concern toward the attitude American have toward the Church. Many people are becoming disillusioned to what the church is teaching. The following quote is from the Religion News Service:
Americans trust the military and the police force significantly more than the church and organized religion, a new Gallup Poll says.
Only 46 percent of respondents said they had either a “great deal”
or “quite a lot” of confidence in the church, compared with 69 percent who said they trusted the military and 54 percent who trust police officers.
After taking some time and reflecting over these numbers and the discontent that so many people have I have come to a couple of conclusions that I would help the current state of the Church.
1. What is being taught? If it is not Jesus Christ and Jesus Christ alone than we are missing the mark. When we tend to make people feel comfortable by not talking about controversial issue than there is a vagueness as to what we really believe. The Church must be founded on Christ!
2. Are we practicing what we are preaching? I often hear sermons on how there is so much social injustice in the world and that we as Christians need to step up and do something about it, but I see very little follow through. The Church has become like the houses built in Matthew 7:24-27. We have great intentions but if we, as a Church, are just content with listening to the Word without actually DOING it, WE WILL CRUMBLE!
3. Is are leadership God-fearing? Is the leadership of the church more concerned about the thoughts of men or the thoughts of God? If this is God’s church (which it should be) it should be led out of fear of pleasing God not men.
There are other questions we could ask (is the Church making Scripture relevant to today?, etc.), but we must first focus on the above! Instead of blaming others for the decline of confidence in the Church, we need to take a proactive step to putting God back as our priority.
