It’s time for change
I have had the great opportunity to grow up in church. That is not necessarily a good thing though. I mean, I appreciate all of the teaching that I received, but as time goes on I get more and more frustrated with some of the man-made traditions that the church hold to as ‘Scripture.’ I believe it is time for change. It is time we look at what we have been doing the past 50 years and look to where we want to be in the next 50.
I know we have seen a resurgence of incoming people to the church in the last 2o years, but there is a scary trend on the horizon. Even the contemporary church is becoming traditional in its own right and time. We have grown accustomed to certian ways of worship and teaching–which I admit have worked and are still working in some places (but the good ‘ole traditional–sit in your pew, sing every verse of some hymns and listen to a 30-45 minute message on the ‘Finding God in Your Tithe,’ also works in some places).
It is time we stretch beyond our comfort-zone, and I mean stretch. We need to continue to take God out of the boxes we constantly put Him in. The moment our spiritual life becomes routine or ‘get use’ to our spirituality, we have taken up residence in our comfort-zone. It is alarming and yet imperative that we realize that we quickly adapt to our environments. What was once alien to us quickly becomes routine. That is why we need to stop and evaluate where we came from, where we are and where we are going.
This is my challenge–to my self–Never become spiritually conforming. Address God in new and different ways. Learn to connect with God as I never have before. Most importantly, get off my spiritual couch and grow as a relevant follower of Christ
